Hi team,
I hope you're all having a great week! This is a tricky post, but something that we'd rather let the community know together, in one hit, rather than having to have multiple small conversations again and again.
A health update on Coach Wacey, everyone's favourite firefighter (sorry Kat) and one of your favourite 3 coaches - was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer.
We are lucky that Wacey is someone who is extremely health-conscious and monitors what they are doing closely. Recently he had noticed some deterioration in his respiratory fitness, however day to day he had felt very much normal. He gave his cardiovascular work a greater bias in his training but strangely didn't see much improvement, it had dropped to levels much lower than he had maintained for a decade-plus, while doing CrossFit. As someone who gets regular bloodwork on his own accord, he had this taken once again and it was discovered he had Bowel cancer. Since this discovery, he has had surgery to remove the cancer. The follow-up scans have all been positive and at this stage, he doesn't require chemotherapy.
Despite significant weight loss, (potentially dropping him to the 76kg weight category and giving him the opportunity to set a few more state records), is feeling well.
It has been incredibly tough as friends, colleagues and a community to hear of Wacey's news, but it has been inspiring to witness Wacey and Tash's positive attitudes through some very difficult circumstances. Wacey has approached this the way he does with everything. Straight in, doing all that he could do that was in his control without any negativity or self-pitty.
The fact that he was still able to train normally and complete the open was astonishing.
Wacey is one of the 5 founding members of CrossFit Claremont, who has been a member of our community since its inception. He embodies what is to not only be a great CrossFitter and coach, but an amazing human and friend and we wish him all the best in his recovery.
He is happy to speak about it if you have questions when you see him around.
