When, how and why did you get started with us? Sean started CrossFit a couple of years before I did and spent much time trying to persuade me to try it out before I finally agreed. One session was enough to put me off (I told him I’d almost rather stick pins in my eyes than go again!!), however, I was keen to somehow improve my strength and fitness for horse-riding which I wanted to get back into. A few months later I was reading a research article on the benefits of high intensity interval training and concluded that CrossFit was likely to be the most time effective way of achieving my fitness goals so I gave it another go. That was around 4 years ago and when our original CrossFit gym closed in 2016 our move across to Claremont CrossFit was a natural, and as it turned out, really positive move to make! What would be your dream workout? Dream & workout don’t quite fit in the same sentence for me but I quite like it when I see wall balls and rowing in the WOD. What workout would you want to avoid? I used to be highly avoidant of the bike but due to my recent A/C joint injury I spent a lot of time on that machine and am now quite good friends with it! Generally I don’t want to avoid anything as I enjoy getting better at the things I can’t do. Favourite Crossfit Athlete? I don’t know any CrossFit athletes other than those at our gym so my favourites are all our coaches and everyone who is so encouraging of each other. What's the best thing you own that cost under $100? 30 minutes of rehab at the physio (after private health rebate) repairing all the (not strictly CrossFit) injuries I have sustained! Biggest fashion mistake you’ve ever made? Growing up in England fashion was a bit more "out there" than it is over here so there are plenty choose from. The funniest, looking back, was wearing leg warmers with stilettos (picture walking back from the pub on icy/snowy pavements!) Favourite quote? So many - today’s favourite “A lie can travel half way around the world whilst the truth is still putting on it’s shoes” - a quote from the 19th Century that is even more relevant today. So you’re not left with such cynicism my other favourite and core belief is “…and the truth will set you free” from the 1st Century. What's your fav 90s jam? My 90s started out with Seal, REM, Bryan Adams and Crowded house and finished (after the birth of our first son) with Nursery Rhymes, Disney soundtracks and Suzuki piano music (I can still hear Sean groaning!) Last thing you watched on TV? Heartland on Netflix - only Emma will know what i am talking about here - Canadian soap about horses and cowboys - beautiful scenery - amazing horses - appalling acting - I’m thinking of emigrating there….. Funniest thing that happened to you recently? I had a man over to measure up for an outdoor roof - unfortunately he stepped back and fell into our fish pond! His main concern was has mobile phone (which was about the only thing that did not get wet!) and after climbing out and removing his shoes he just carried on measuring up! It was agony trying not to laugh for the next half an hour whilst he completed his work so as soon as he had left I collapsed in a hysterical (laughing) heap. It was quite some time before my family could get any sense out of me! Most used emoji? 😊 If you could have one other CrossFit Claremont members body part, what would it be? One of the things I really like about CrossFit is it’s focus on function and application to movement in daily life. Everyone in our gym has an amazing body and everyone is working out to improve their own fitness and function. I think we all do best looking after and loving our own bodies.
