September Member of the Month - 1/2: Myra Keep

The first member of the month for September is Myra. Myra is our resident ultra-endurance athlete. One of the photos below (try to guess) is from a recent 12 hour track Ultra Marathon in Bunbury. She took out the title running 101.42km!! Inspirational with some of the feats she has accomplished, it has been great to see Myra come to far with her strength, movement and flexibility. She is always a smiling face in the afternoon, it's a pleasure to have her!

When, how and why did you get started with us? Late 2016, on Carrington Street. Cynthia had joined about a year before, and raved about it, both before and after she got sick. She kept on at me to give it a go. I’d dabbled in weightlifting in my teens and 20s, and have always liked weights, but had a tendency to bulk up very quickly. The range and variety of workouts at Crossfit appealed, and here I am!

What would be your dream workout? I like just about everything except the bike! Anything with squats, thrusters and deadlifts would be ideal. I just wish the runs were a little longer……

What workout would you want to avoid? Anything with two-footed jumps – so skipping and box jumps. My achilles tendons ache at the thought of them…..

Favourite Crossfit Athlete? My favourites are all here at CFC. The guys and gals of the 4.30 and 5.30 classes are inspirational on a daily basis.

What's the best thing you own that cost under $100? My “Cure Brain Cancer” running hat that I bought when Cyn got sick. I’ve run several thousand kilometres in that hat now, and raised a fair few thousand dollars for charity in the process. She’s with me at all my races.

Biggest fashion mistake you’ve ever made? Transitioning from shaved head with a flat-top and quiff to “long hair” involved a few months of bad nylon hair extensions in pure white that went down to my butt (done by my boyfriend of the time, with superglue), with badly dyed (blonde) bits of my own hair that were growing out from being previously shaved practically bald, along with the stupidly long pink hair at the front that I could no longer be bothered to put into a quiff, so ended up rolling up like a sausage and pinning to the front of my head. Stylish! Sadly it was also my first-year uni photo, which stayed with me for a long time!

Favourite quote? Be yourself, everyone else is already taken – Oscar Wilde

Funniest thing that happened to you recently? Was discussing with Sue Gilbey how to do toes to bar when you have an enormous arse. Sue’s comment that it was “like swinging a whole other person” still makes me smile.

Most used emoji? 🤪 and 😇

If you could have one other CrossFit Claremont members body part, what would it be? I’m actually kind of happy with all of my own. They may not be the best looking, or the strongest, but they put up with all of the dumb stuff I make them do, and rarely let me down.
